Chipper Cash, an African cross-border payments company, has partnered with Nigerian nonprofit Executives Initiative on the new campaign ‘Chipping Away Illiteracy through Football’.
The initiative supported school children in the Tarkwa Bay community with financial aid in the form of scholarships, as well as kick-starting pupils' interest in school life and academia via a football tournament which attracted more than 150 children. Prizes of school essentials and more scholarships were awarded.
Why football?
Football is a uniquely unifying force, and Chipper saw an opportunity to attract students back to the classroom through their love of the sport. The scholarships offer children an opportunity to grow beyond their circumstances through an education that supports their passion for football and encourages excitement for learning.
Why Tarkwa Bay?
Tarkwa Bay is a waterfront community in Lagos State. In 2020, thousands of residents were displaced following mass evictions. Without the means to support themselves, many had no access to basic amenities such as electricity and drinking water. The effects were devastating for the children of the community. Most dropped out of school during the displacement.
As Chipper's Country Director for Nigeria, Abi Animashaun explained, investing in the country’s future workforce is vital as 'brain drain'—the process in which a country loses its most educated and talented workers to other geographies—is causing attrition in the Nigerian workforce: “This initiative demonstrates Chipper’s commitment to foster collaborative partnerships which aid in advancing social development and lifelong skills in indigent children across the continent.”
Chipper Cash chose to partner with Executives Initiative because of their commitment to help deliver on many of the United Nation's Global Goals:
- Goal 1: No Poverty
- Goal 2: Zero Hunger
- Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
- Goal 4: Quality Education
- Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Dare Asobele, Founder of Executives Initiative, said: “We’re excited to partner with Chipper to put a smile on the faces of these young stars, and we hope to create a chain reaction that will promote collaboration and philanthropy.”
Goldie Iyamu, Chipper Cash’s Marketing Campaign Manager, added: “Education is important to create a world where, irrespective of your station or status, any child with a dream and the requisite determination can be a future leader of industry or government.”
